Newsletter Update
If you are reading this newsletter on the Nutmeg Division’s website, you more than likely will not see any pictures or logos imbedded in the newsletter. At this time, I still need more education and time on how to post pictures (imbedded in the newsletter) onto the website.
If you go down to the very bottom of the newsletter (within the website), you will find a link for the PDF version that you can then click on. The PDF version should have all of the imbedded pictures and logos.

The Volume 14, issue 4 of THE FLYER will be scheduled for publication sometime during the last week of November 2013.
If anyone has a short article that they would like to have included in the next issue of THE FLYER please send it to Ron Pelletier at nmranutmegmembership@comcast.net as soon as possible. The deadline will be whenever I get it as it usually ends up being last minute anyway due to end of month work schedules.

August 2013
Help Wanted!
The board is still looking for a few good people. We have been without a secretary for a while. So if someone would be willing to take notes during the board meetings and ready them to be posted on the division website and/or the newsletter, do we have a job for you! Please contact James Mayo at jmayo_railfan@yahoo.com
Help Wanted!
Also we would like to have the position of layout coordinator filled. If you would like to help the board coordinate layouts for visits after the general membership meetings, contact any of the board members.
Help Wanted!
Have you been working on a model railroad project? Why don't you bring it along to a general membership meeting? Pictures are acceptable if you can't get the layout out of the door! You don't have to be an expert on a subject, just share what you did with the rest of us.
Help Wanted!
And speaking of layouts, have you gotten to a point in your layout construction that you would be willing to show off your great work? I find it interesting to see other peoples techniques for layout construction and the thought processes behind it (the how and why). Not to take away from a "finished" layout, those are a joy to see also. So… if this interests you, contact any of the board members.
Help Wanted!
Hey, a pattern may be developing here! (Yes, there is)
The next Northeast Region, NMRA Convention will be in Palmer, Mass. The HUB Division will be co-hosting this layout with us (or it may be the other way around), with ground zero at the Steaming Tender (that would be the place across from the pink house in a lot of railfan pictures). The show committee would like volunteers from the Nutmeg Division to help plan and pull of the convention. So if you would like to help plan a convention and/or work at the convention and associated show, please contact Ken May kenneth.may@comcast.net or myself jmayo_railfan@yahoo.com.
Enough of the pattern, I am planning on giving a presentation on the vertical staging yard that I built for my layout. My plan is to give the presentation and the open my layout for viewing either February or April of 2014. My layout is nowhere near "finished", but you can see a working vertical staging yard and a room full of sub-roadbed and homemade Homa-bed. If you are going to be at the Northeast Region, NMRA Convention in Laconia, NH, you just might see me there. I'll be with the Amherst Belt Lines Modular group.
Train show season is upon us, so the Nutmeg Division is working on membership flyers for distribution. These are intended to be displayed on the "promotional" table at train shows. The thought is that all people that attend train shows are potential members of the NMRA, and if they live near us, potential members of the Nutmeg Division. So when the flyers are ready for distribution, please take them to train shows that you may attend.
Now that promoting the hobby and the Amherst Railway Society have been brought up!
Help Wanted!
The Northeast Region, NMRA will have a booth at the Amherst Railway Society hobby show. Volunteers will be needed to man the promotional booth at the show. Plan accordingly, take 30 minutes or so at the show to promote the hobby (nearly everybody at train shows likes trains) promote the NMRA and the Nutmeg Division.
Help Wanted!
Not this time, the soap box is wanted elsewhere. See you at the next meeting, introduce yourself. Please sign in at the meeting (Ron Pelletier will remind everyone to do so if you forgotten) and use a name tag (it's the best way for me to remember who I am).

Due to some rule changes from the IRS (that we did not know about) and other factors, the Nutmeg Division had inadvertently filed the wrong forms at tax-time; as a result, the Nutmeg Division has been denied Federal Tax exempt status. As of 8/21/2013 the IRS has received the paperwork (along with the additional funds) from the Nutmeg Division requesting reinstatement of our Federal tax exempt status.
From Director Peter Tierinni: vergo55@sbcglobal.net
I have a 2 1/2 year old grandson named Anthony. I am writing with all the love and pride that a grandfather of 10 grandchildren could have. With all the different kind of trains out there, Thomas the Tank engine, etc. Anthony has fallen in love with my HO scale train layout. I couldn't lay down the basic track fast enough for him. He was always wanted to sit on my lap, watching me and his father, Eric, shaping the layout, and securing it. I always had to come up with a good excuse, just a few more days, just a few more minutes, papa has to go to the hobby store for a few extra pieces of track". When the big day finally arrived, Anthony was right there waiting anxiously, with great anticipation. As soon as the engine started making its way around the track, he started trying to follow it around the layout. Whenever and wherever the train came close to the edge of the board, Anthony tried to reach up and grab the engine. He would yell Choo-Choo!! Each time the train passed him and he came close, I would slow it down, and then speed up the engine to get him to miss. Well, as fate would have it, little Anthony out smarted me. When I sped up, he would go to where the train had yet to go. And, BINGO, he grabbed it. I tried to put up barriers so he couldn't reach the engine, BUT he overcame that too! He would find one of his big toy trucks, or even a storage box to stand on, climb up on that, and he would be back in business again. That's my grandson Anthony. If he grows up to appreciate model railroading as much as he does now, the hobby will be in good hands. Peter J. "papa" Tierinni.

In the next couple of months we should be able to start sending out e-mails via the website rather than directly from my home computer. If you remember any of my earlier problems with sending e-mails, (the five to six hours required for each e-mail message), the process through the website will be a great advantage. You will be able to get late breaking information in a timelier period. In the past, it may have taken a day (even up to a week) for me to get the information out to you.
Please add the following address to your contact list or your favorite list.
Dear Nutmeg Division Members
The Nutmeg Division has a total of three voting members of the Board of Directors. Each director serves for a three year term. In April of each year, one of the three directors term will expire, so there will be a vote in April of each year to either select a new director for a three year term or to re-elect the outgoing director if that person has so decided to stay on for another term of three years.
In April 2013 we did have an election and here are the results:
James Mayo’s (first) term as director ends in April 2014
Peter Tierinni’s (first) term as director ends in April 2015
Douglas Henley’s (first) term as director ended in April 2013
Douglas Henley was re-elected for a second term which will end in 2016
James Mayo was re-elected as Superintendent which will end in 2014.
If you wish to have your name listed on the ballot for director in April 2014 please send your intentions to Ron Pelletier nmranutmegmembership@comcast.net
On November 16, 2013 the Nutmeg Division has been invited to a special presentation by one of the Greats: Tony Koester.
He will have an open forum on Kit bashing.
The meeting will be at:

SPECIAL INFORMATION
Lakeport’s Railroad History
The Seacoast Division proposed to the NER to hold its 2013 convention in Laconia, NH, for many reasons, but one of the most important ones was the historical significance of railroading in this region. As the NER Convention Handbook states, a good convention needs to have a “good balance between model and prototype.” With this in mind, the convention planners have arranged several opportunities for convention-goers to learn about the history and legacy of railroading in the Lakes Region as well as the State of New Hampshire and beyond. The development in this territory of rail service and its evolution is typical of many other parts of the country and can serve all modelers who want to create their own believable model layouts.
Early Local Railroad History Lakeport, NH, once called Lake Village, is actually a part of Laconia, NH. The Boston, Concord, and Montreal Railroad first served Lakeport on October 2, 1848. As its name suggests, this railroad originally aspired to connect Boston and southern New Hampshire with Montreal. Eventually, it settled on a northern terminus of Wells River, Vermont, which it reached in May, 1853, connecting to other railroads serving the Connecticut River Valley and beyond. Lakeport became a very important location on the railroad. At its height, eight passenger trains per day rolled through Lakeport as well as a number of through freights. In 1888, Lakeport also became a railroad junction when the Lake Shore Railroad began construction along the southeastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee from Alton Bay, NH. The Boston and Maine Railroad took over the railroad in 1895.
Boston and Maine The B&M had its roots in 1833 and consolidated many smaller railroads in New Hampshire and neighboring states until by 1900 it operated on 2,324 miles of track in northern New England, one of the most important rail systems in the Northeast. It controlled 96% of the 1,174 miles of rail in New Hampshire. It aided growth in local agriculture, forestry products, manufacturing, and tourism. It even expanded into electric street railways and built sixteen logging railroads in the White Mountains. Competition from automobiles and aircraft during the 20th century resulted in declaration of bankruptcy in 1970.
Presentations and Displays of Railroad History at Tracks to Lakeport 2013
- Lake and railroad transportation system presentation, including background of the two vessels named Mount Washington, by noted author Bruce D. Heald, PhD.
- History of the Lake Shore Railroad (1889-1935) by local historian Marty Cornelissen, including photos and details of surviving structures.
- The history of the Boston and Maine Railroad with special attention to New Hampshire lines by Buddy Winiarz of the Boston and Maine Railroad Historical Society. Buddy will show many photos from his collection.
- The Laconia Car Company story by noted local journalist Warren Huse.
- Publications and other materials from the BMRRHS will be on display, thanks to Jim Nigzus, who also will provide additional information sought by convention-goers.
- Local railroad museums, e.g., Ashland Train Station and Wakefield Station and Freight House, will be open for convention-goers to visit historic structures.
- Self-guided tours of surviving railroad structures are planned.
Register Now for Tracks to Lakeport 2013if you have not already done so, register now by using the form in The Coupler (issue 250) or at the convention website http://convention.nernmra.org. There will be 30 great scheduled clinics to choose from (plus other clinics to be arranged by the modular layout organizers) as well as 30 or so layouts to tour. Layout operating opportunities abound, both on home layouts and in the convention hotel. Also enjoy great prototype rides, a large raffle, and the model and photo contests and showcase. All of this in a resort hotel in a beautiful vacation area with lots of non-rail activities to choose from.

Tour 2 will start at the Laconia station, pass the Lakeport freight house and include the Ashland station and freight house, and the Plymouth station. Four covered bridges can be seen on this tour, too!

Want to join in the prototype operations fun on some great local layouts? An operations weekend is coming to Long Island, under the sponsorship of the Sunrise Trail Division, NMRA, and the West Island Model Railroad Club. We will have four operations sessions - One on Friday evening, two on Saturday and one on Sunday morning - at ten different layouts within about 30 minutes of central Nassau County. They range in size from a 2 x 10 layout representing one city block plus a floatbridge in New York City to a 5,600 square foot club layout representing a line from the New Jersey waterfront to central Pennsylvania. They range in era from 1940 to the 1990's, and in theme from backwoods logging to prototype mainline with helper power.
More detailed information on layouts will be posted on the following website http://www.islandops.org later in the fall of 2013. We anticipate sign up for IslandOps to be available in February, 2014. If you have any questions, please email info@islandops.org
Click on the following link for some of the layouts that will be participating. There may be some names that you will know.
Talk about a G-Scale Garden Layout, you have got to see this.
If you notice there are parts that are not complete they are intended to be added to this G scale layout!
He has 4000 freight cars, 400 passenger cars and 300 locomotives.
The wall is being extended to enclose those areas.
Work sessions included pickup trucks, small bulldozers and excavators.
Would be great to be his friend!

Connecticut Valley Hospital Railroad Project
All of the railroad pieces have now arrived at the hospital. It is not currently in its permanent home, but is in a large enough space to reassemble it and prepare for the final move. I would like to get a work group to put it back on its legs and get electrical connectors installed so it can be plugged together after the final move. There are also some scenery and track sections that will need repair. If you are interested in working on this project please contact Timothy Denier at 860-262-5996 or at timothy.denier@ct.gov.
I would like to thank the LBSRailroad and Richard Murray through the HUB divisions’ e-mail network for the following information
A new rail line in Boston to be built in two years! Time will tell.
After you read the above article then read the following comment.
Got a whoops!
The B&M had Doodlebugs before the Budd Cars (aka DMU cars). These were not doublended with controls at both ends so they had to be turned on a “Y” or a turntable.
A couple of the B&M Budd Cars were re-habilitated and are in service on the Dallas-Ft. Worth rail line – still have the builders plates reflecting the original owner - Boston & Maine. Also the North Conway Scenic is running an old Budd car. If it made economic sense to put those cars in operational condition and run them in revenue service, then….
The MBTA a few years ago rejected buying new DMUs. These would have saved a lot of fuel running late trains when the number of passengers certainly does not justify 5 – 8 car trains.
