The next issue of THE FLYER will be scheduled for publication sometime during the last week of August 2013.
If anyone has a short article that they would like to have included in the next issue of THE FLYER please send it to Ron Pelletier at nmranutmegmembership@comcast.net as soon as possible. The deadline will be the week of August 11, 2013.
From the Desk of the Superintendent, James Mayo: jmayo_railfan@yahoo.com
May 2013
Let me start off by thanking Dick Greene for his time and effort spent being the layout coordinator. Your work has helped us greatly and as far as I know, everyone has enjoyed the layouts.
That brings me to the second item; we (the board) would like to have somebody volunteer to replace Dick as layout coordinator. Anyone that is interested can contact any of the board members (Douglas, Peter or I).
So now that the sun is out most of the day, and the weather is getting warmer, how many of you are going to ditch the beach and hide in the basement? Count me in! If you have any projects or plans for the summer months, bring them along and share. I got my vertical staging yard mechanically working, ready to conduct electrons and have some track on it! So now it's on to bench work, where even the wife can tell that I have made progress.
Treasurer's Report
Balance as of 30 April 2013 is $1100.73
Balance as of 31 January 2013 was $470.87
A big thanks to Mike Wlochowski and Bruce Hoffman for the winning bids on the equipment at the last division meeting in April.
James Mayo
Superintendent
Nutmeg Division
P.S. The table saw, wood glue and clamps have been taunting me this entire time.
From Director Peter Tierinni: vergo55@sbcglobal.net
I have 2 articles:
At the last board meeting, the board voted to enhance the white elephant table, with the concept of a guest vendor. This person, who is a regular at most area train shows, will be selling trains etc. for the June 8th meeting.
He has rented 2 tables, the cost being paid into the Nutmeg Division’s treasury. I have done business with John in the past and I believe that John is a good person with a nice assortment of merchandise. Hopefully, if this works out and with support from the members of the Nutmeg Division, we can have a guest vendor or 2 at selected meetings in the future. Please make John feel welcome.
NOTICE TO ALL NUTMEG DIVISION MEMBERS
After the meeting please contact any of the Board of Director Officers with your thoughts and suggestions about the above concept.
Superintendent, James Mayo jmayo_railfan@yahoo.com
Director, Douglas Henley dhenley@comcast.net
Director, Peter J. Tierinni vergo55@sbcglobal.net
Peter would also like to know from club members, what gauge of trains members are interested in. Many thanks in advance.
Second article: Work on my layout, "the Vernon Dogleg", is still coming along, but due to summer, slow, but sure. I have finished most of the homemade filter trees. Just for a change of pace, I made a few out of floor stripping machine pads. I have also completed the basics of false front building. These have been made out of foam board, framed with balsa wood. Painting and adding some signage will be next. On the design board is a tunnel. This will be covered with a combination of cloth and panel adhesive. No plaster will be used. I will be looking at the possibility of using dyed green fiber fill, covered with ground up foam. This will be then used to cover the tunnel, to look like trees. After that, I will then stopping work for the summer months. LORD HELP US!! I am still picking up train stuff here and there, if anybody knows of anyone who has things to sell, please contact me. See you at the next meeting. Peter J Tierinni

The June newsletter of the Amherst Railway Society is available at http://www.amherstrail.org/ARS_June_2013_online.pdf there is some very interesting information about the SILENT AUCTION on page 5 of the newsletter.
For those of you who were fortunate to go on the Saratoga & North Creek Excursion hosted by the HUB Division and or the NER Convention in Syracuse, NY last September, the HUB Division has updated their web site with approximately 200 photographs covering both activities. http://www.hubdiv.org/pictures.htm
Dear Nutmeg Division Members
The Nutmeg Division has a total of three voting members of the Board of Directors. Each director serves for a three year term. In April of each year, one of the three directors term will expire, so there will be a vote in April of each year to either select a new director for a three year term or to re-elect the outgoing director if that person has so decided to stay on for another term of three years.
In April 2013 we did have an election and here are the results:
James Mayo’s (first) term as director ends in April 2014
Peter Tierinni’s (first) term as director ends in April 2015
Douglas Henley’s (first) term as director ended in April 2013
Douglas Henley was re-elected for a second term which will end in 2016
James Mayo was re-elected as Superintendent which will end in 2014.
If you wish to have your name listed on the ballot for director in April 2014 please send your intentions to Ron Pelletier at the e-mail listed at the end of this newsletter.
Newsletter Update
If you are reading this on the Nutmeg Division’s website, then I have finally been able to read my own writing (actually printing) and have been able to post THE FLYER to the website.
I would like to thank David Abrames our website administrator with finding the glitch in the system that was preventing me from posting to the website. I would also like to thank David for his patience in trying to guide me in and through the process of uploading to the website.
At this time, I still need more education on how to post pictures (imbedded in the newsletter) onto the website. As I get more comfortable with the process of posting to the website I will start to separate out the events section of newsletter and put it in the proper section of the website.

Articles / Stories /Letters
Modeling in Afghanistan by Jeff Hanke!!!UPDATE!!!
Jeff may not know it yet (at least I didn’t tell him (EDITOR)), but he made it into the NMRA Magazine.
The article from Jeff first appeared in the March – May issue of THE FLYER and was mentioned in the DIVISION BUSINESS CAR section by Jim Zinser of the NMRA MAGAZINE. On page 41 you will find the article “Building Models on Vacation…or in a War Zone”
You will find additional information about the article and the article itself http://www.nmra.org/member/NMRA-at-Home
Congratulations Jeff, Please stay safe and hurry Home. Jeff, when you know when you will be arriving back in the states please let me know ahead of time if you can, Ron.
Editor’s note: On behalf of the entire Nutmeg Division I would like to pass on my sincere thank you to Jeff (who is deployed in Kabul) and all of the other men and women serving our country all over the world to help keep us safe and free. Yes Jeff, I do believe you may have the record for the longest (distance) submission for an article for THE FLYER.
I also would like to apologize to Jeff that I was not able to include the pictures that he provided. The pictures he provided are as follows:
Caption Supplies: Here are the supplies loaded back into the box to show you how much will actually fit in two boxes.
Caption IMG 89: This is a shot taken at my desk working on the cars. This whole work space is just 2 1/2 feet by 1 1/2 feet.
Caption Jeff Arrival Kabul: Just a shot of me on Day 1 here.
Caption Room Overview: This is my desk; the hobby area was set up between my laptop and the cabinet on the left. That's all the space you need.
If you are interested in seeing the pictures please send an e-mail to nmranutmegmembership@comcast.net requesting the pictures and I will see what I can do about getting them to you.
RE-STARTING A LAYOUT Fred Wintsch: Past Superintendent
As many of you know, my wife and I moved to Ashlar Village in Wallingford last September. We were fortunate to obtain one of the larger units with a basement, so I was able to import my old layout segments. I had built it in segments in anticipation of a downsizing move. While my layout was fine watching the trains go around and around, I didn’t feel there were sufficient opportunities for operation and switching.
I asked Mike Tylick to design a layout for me that would incorporate some of the parts that survived the move, include a port scene, a roundhouse and plenty of switching while still allowing for a passenger traffic. He did a great job.
Editor’s Note:
Fred did provide a picture along with his article, but unfortunately I still have to learn how to have pictures show up in the newsletter on the website. At least I have learned how to get the newsletter on the Website. If you wish to see the picture, please contact Ronald Pelletier at nmranutmegmembership@comcast.net and I will try sending it to you.
An RC Milestone
Nutmeg Division member Dan Ticson reports he has reached an important milestone after testing his battery powered radio controlled locomotive under actual layout running conditions. Using available HO and hobby radio parts, an AMD-103 was assembled and operated on several club layouts including the Mohegan Pequot Model Railroad Club and the Silk City Model Railroad Club.
The objective was to demonstrate the feasibility of controlling a train without power or signals through the track. The benefits envisioned were unlimited track configurations, no wiring of track, no track maintenance, multiple train operation with individual cab control, and realistic, reliable operation. Dan concludes these objectives have been met and anticipates incorporating engine sound and switch control in the near future. He emphasized this unique method for controlling HO trains allows one to operate on any type of HO Gauge layout without interfering with the host operating system.
When you read this, Dan will have presented his experience with battery power and radio control at the Northeast Prototype Modelers Meet on June 1. He will also be presenting his experience at the Hub Division/NMRA Railfun meeting on October 25. A photo of the engine's components was also provided with this article, but unfortunately not able to post it to the website at present. Below is a link to a YouTube video showing the actual test run at the Silk City Model Railroad Club in Manchester CT.

The following request is from Bill Hodges Coordinator of the Free-Mo Modular Setup for the Northeast Region Convention.
The Northeast Region Convention at Laconia in October this year will have a first in that there will be space, approximately 40' X 72', for a significant operating Free-Mo layout. The space will include an area for presentation and Free-Mo clinics. Because of the educational focus we will accept modules under construction. The only requirement is that they meet the national or Seacoast Division Free-Mo standard and be operational by Labor Day this year. Sceniced modules are wanted as well to show what can be done with Free-mo. We hope to entertain all modules, but may need to decline some modules to allow more people to participate.
While the convention is months away, we want to start the list of possible modules to include and begin designing possible layouts. Please reply to Bill Hodges hodges_b@myfairpoint.net with the plan drawing including dimensions to 1/8" of the module(s) and degree of completion (planned, built- but not operational, operational, sceniced/ completed). Also, please include "CFM" in the subject line. We see this as a great opportunity to feature this aspect of the hobby and hope you can attend.
Thank you for your assistance and please contact me if you have any questions.
Bill Hodges

Note from the editor. Due to the quantity of listings for events (pages and pages) the previous newsletters had the information separated by local and national events. I have now combined the two sections and listed them in chronological order. I have also identified the events that are within the Nutmeg Division and its sister divisions by hi-liting the events with the color green for easier recognition when viewing this information on your computer.
